Smokeyard BBQ & Chop Shop To Shutter San Diego Location At Westfield UTC Mall

August 14, 2019

After less than 2 years in business, Mammoth-based Smokeyard BBQ & Chop Shop will shutter its San Diego location this weekend.

In 2009, San Diego natives and brothers Guy & Alon Ravid opened the first Smokeyard BBQ & Chop Shop in the ski town of Mammoth Lakes, CA. The restaurant was a quick success due to its elevated menu centered around South African-inspired steaks and slow-smoked barbecue. In partnership with Executive Chef Matt Sramek, the second location of Smokeyard BBQ opened within Westfield UTC in November 2017. Sramek left the restaurant the following year to join Coronado-based Blue Bridge Hospitality and is now the Executive Chef of Little Frenchie.

Smokeyard BBQ & Chop Shop will close its Westfield UTC location after business this Saturday, August 17, but the eatery is operating under normal business hours until then. The restaurant suffered from a difficult location inside the La Jolla-based retail mall and ownership is actively searching to find a new space to reopen in San Diego, although nothing has been secured at this point.
