Japanese-Style Rooftop Restaurant 5th & Sky Unveils This Weekend In San Diego's Gaslamp

August 15, 2019

Opening this weekend on the top floor of downtown San Diego's new Theatre Box luxury cinema is 5th & Sky Rooftop Gardens & Lounge - a 5,000 square foot, Japanese-style cocktail bar and restaurant perched high above the Gaslamp Quarter.

A tunnel adorned with roses and flowers within downtown's Theatre Box reveals the property's newest concept - 5th & Sky, a rooftop bar and restaurant featuring skyline views of downtown San Diego and the Coronado Bridge. The open-air bar offers a picturesque setting to dine and lounge under cherry blossom trees, with firepit tables and even a one-of-a-kind hand-painted mural by famed artist Kahori Maki. The rooftop eatery also houses a sushi bar with patio-style seating and an intimate central bar.

The menu at 5th & Sky is centered around shareable place highlighted by fresh sushi selections and signature small plates. Sushi options include the Gaslamp Roll, filled with crab, avocado and asparagus, topped with smoked filet mignon, avocado mousse, crispy shallots and Unagi sauce. The  Smoker Roll has cream cheese, avocado and smoked salmon roll topped with nori, smoked unagi and toasted sesame seeds. Signature small plates include smoked filet carpaccio toast, grilled levain bread topped with carpaccio, crispy capers, baby arugula, lemon zest, citrus herb aioli and shaved Manchego cheese. There is also the pork belly and yellow watermelon pops with jalapeño-maple syrup; Hawaiian Bigeye tuna poke with mango, cucumber, seaweed cracker and house shoyu sauce atop sushi rice; and more. Over-the-top cocktails are complemented by a curated wine list and local craft beer.

5th & Sky accommodates up to 200 guests and is open Thursday through Saturday from 4pm to midnight and 11amto 5pm on Sunday. Happy hour is offered from 4 to 6 p.m. daily, with half-priced cocktails and select appetizers. 5th & Sky will also set the mood for late-night energy, offering bottle service packages and hosting various live DJs Friday and Saturday nights.

From the team behind Los Angeles' iconic Chinese Theatre, Theatre Box opened last December and houses eight high-definition movie screens on the second floor of the building with 815 high-end, reclining seats in total, as well as front row lounges for two. Theatre Box shares its 73,000 square-foot space with Sugar Factory American Brasserie & Chocolate Lounge, as well as the incoming Nick Cannon’s Wild'N Out Sports Bar & Arcade and Pitbull's ILov305.
