Years in the making, the $2 million, 14,000 square-foot third location of Soda & Swine unveils today on the University of California San Diego campus in the space occupied by Porter's Pub for more than two decades.
CH Projects - the burgeoning hospitality group behind many San Diego eateries including Craft & Commerce, Ironside Fish & Oyster, Born & Raised, and Morning Glory - was approved by the University Centers Advisory Board in May 2017 to take over the lease at the space next to the UCSD Student Center that was occupied by Porter's Pub from 1993 to 2015. The restaurant group's founder Arsalun Tafazoli is actually a UCSD alumni and decided to install a location of his Soda & Swine concept on campus. The original location of the Soda & Swine concept opened in Normal Heights in February 2013 with a menu designed by corporate executive chef and partner Jason McCleod based around an eclectic array of meatballs. A second outpost debuted in Liberty Station in July 2015 and the original location received a design and menu overhaul earlier this summer.
Upon entering the new Soda & Swine, there is a spinning sign atop a 14 foot high silo firepit bar table on the front patio. Designed in partnership with Paul Basile and BASILE Studio, the interior dining area and bar are adorned with wood and gold, with 24 beer taps extending from the ceiling behind the central bar. The all-day eatery will offer a coffee and breakfast menu in the morning, including house-made "shitty" donuts available via cart, breakfast tacos, and egg sandwiches. There will be lunch and dinner offerings ranging from meatball sliders and burgers, as well as more substantial entrees, appetizers, salads and desserts. The restaurant will also offer new options to accommodate students with dietary restrictions like vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free. Beer & wine will also be served, and the space will eventually be used to host concerts in the neighboring the Stage Room space.
