The Friendly Tavern Now Open In Former Carnitas' Snack Shack Space In North Park

September 16, 2019

Based on the success of their Dirty Flat Top Cheeseburger, the team behing The Friendly expanded the concept into the space that previously housed Carnitas' Snack Shack for the opening of burger-centric The Friendly Tavern.

As detailed when the story broke back in July, Chef Hanis Cavin, who founded the Carnitas' Snack Shack brand in San Diego's North Park neighborhood in 2011, has partnered with longtime friend and colleague Brandon Zanavich from The Friendly pizzeria. After a simple remodel, the duo converted the short-lived The Porchetta Shack space into The Friendly Tavern, a burger eatery and full service bar. Prior to opening The Friendly in early 2018, Zanavich worked for Chef Cavin at Carnitas' Snack Shack.

The Friendly Tavern will serve a rotating chalk-board menu of burgers, as well as sides like fries and onion rings. Like has become a point of contention at the original The Friendly, there will be no modifications to the menu offerings at the new tavern. There will also be a concise cocktail list and a few taps devoted to Fall Brewing beers. The eatery is currently in its soft opening phase, opening at 5pm daily until around 10pm.

The Friendly Tavern is located at 2632 University Avenue in North Park. For more information, check out the sample menu below.
