San Diego's Kitchens for Good is teaming up with 35 local and national chefs to encourage rethinking kitchen waste at the 2nd annual WASTED: A Celebration of Sustainable Food - a fundraiser tasting event taking place on Sunday, October 20, from 4-6:30pm, at the Kitchens for Good venue. We are raffling off two tickets to this fun & delicious event so read on and be sure to enter.
According to a National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) report, approximately 40 percent of edible food ends up in landfills in the United States. Further, nearly one in six San Diegans lacks access to healthy, affordable food, according to a study conducted by Feeding San Diego. Chefs at the WASTED event will demonstrate ways to turn food waste into inspiring dishes with some rethinking of ingredients and creative cooking. Day-old bread? Turn it into beer. Bruised fruit is great for desserts while savory bites can be concocted using the whole animal or vegetable. Attendees will get to cast their votes to choose the winning dishes in the savory, sweet and cocktail categories.
Kitchens for Good culinary students, who are gaining employment skills following incarceration, homelessness and/or foster care, will be matched with competing chefs in the preparation of dishes for the event. Participating vendors serving up samples at WASTED include Seth Bradley and Ryan Van Voorhis of Nude Dude Food, Paul Dimech of Paul's Paellas, Christopher Gentile from AVANT, Food Network's Chopped Alum Lamar Moore, Davin Waite of Wrench + Rodent, Tara May of Cucina Sorella, Aaron Obregon of AlBaCa, Ryan Orland of International Smoke, Drew Bent from Lola 55, Filippo Piccini from Solare Ristorante, MasterChef winner Dino Luciano and many more.
Tickets to WASTED are available online starting at $115. A portion of each ticket is tax deductible. All proceeds will support Kitchens for Good, a non-profit organization that tackles issues of food waste, poverty and hunger.
WASTED will take place at the Kitchens For Good venue located at 404 Euclid Avenue. For more information and to buy tickets, visit wastedcelebration.com.
