La Catrina Tapas & Cantina Ends Run In North Park After Less Than A Year In Business

October 28, 2019

A sign on the door reads "Closed for remodeling", but La Catrina Tapas & Cantina has been shuttered since earlier this month, their phone is disconnected, and word on the street is the Baja-style bar & restaurant in partnership with the owner of City Tacos will not be reopening.

Opened at 3139 University Avenue in San Diego's North Park in mid-October 2018, La Catrina Tapas & Cantina replaced Tostadas North Park and was a partner project between City Tacos owner Gerry Torres and Sonora, MX-native Roger Canez, who also owned the now-defunct Burrology in North Park and Sonora Express Meat Boutique in Tijuana. The restaurant offered a menu inspired by Baja's Valle de Guadalupe wine country, even boasting a menu designed by Animalón chef Brandon Rodriguez.

There is no word for the reason behind La Catrina's closure, but City Tacos is currently in the process of a local expansion to include new branches in Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, and Sorrento Valley, so ownership may want to focus attention on that concept. We reached out to the restaurant for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publishing.
