The Friendly Co-Founder To Bring California-Meets-Italian Cuisine To San Diego's Barrio Logan

November 18, 2019

From a catering company on a trailer to a custom built food truck, Caliano is continuing its evolution and will soon open a brick-and-mortar location in San Diego's Barrio Logan community, offering a pizzeria menu blending Californian and Italian cuisine.

Fresh off a first place performance at yesterday's San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival Taco TKO Throwdown, Chef Mario Maruca is focusing his attention on taking his Caliano food truck concept and expanding it to a brick-and-mortar location. Mario was also a partner at The Friendly, but word on the street is he had a falling out with partner Brandon Zanavich and Maruca confirmed he sold his interest in the North Park pizzeria (although he remains listed as a Managing Member on the The Friendly's liquor license and LLC documents).

The new Caliano restaurant will soon install within the 1,000 square-foot standalone building at 2205 Logan Avenue in San Diego's historic Barrio Logan community. Expect a "Donnie Brasco meets Barrio vibe" with a menu of pizza by the slice and other rotating daily specials, similar to The Friendly, as well as area beers on tap and by the can. There is no timeline on an opening date for Caliano but expect it to be sometime in 2020.
