Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery Ends Decades Long Run In La Jolla

March 1, 2020

After more than two decades in business, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery has shuttered its last remaining San Diego location.

Owned by Nashville, TN based CraftWorks Holdings Inc. - which operates several casual dining restaurant chains including Logan's Roadhouse, Old Chicago, and Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants - Rock Bottom has been sited across from the University of California San Diego campus since 1998. There was also a location in downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter from 1999 until 2013. Despite being a corporate chain-owned brewpub, Rock Bottom's beers have received many awards throughout the years. Last summer, CraftWorks shuttered another of its San Diego brewpubs - Gordon Biersch in Mission Valley - which will reopen as Puesto Cerveceria this spring.

Just last month, the Wallstreet Journal reported that a bankruptcy is likely on the horizon for CraftWorks Holdings Inc., so the company's financial instability likely precipitated the Rock Bottom closure in La Jolla. There is no word on who will be moving into the now-vacant building at  8980 La Jolla Village Drive.
