Microsoft Founder Bill Gates Purchases San Diego Home For Record $43 Million

April 22, 2020

According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft founder and one of the richest men on the planet Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have purchased a 5,800 square-foot beachfront home in San Diego's Del Mar for $43 Million, becoming the most expensive residential purchase ever made in neighborhood.

The price for the six-bedroom Del Mar home is one of the largest deals ever recorded in the San Diego area, stated the Wall Street Journal. The Microsoft co-founder, along with his wife and co-founder at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, finalized the purchase of the home in March 2020 from Madeleine Pickens, who is the former wife of Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens. When Pickens purchased the home in 2007 for $35 million, it originally was one of four adjacent parcels and was considered as the highest priced sale for a Del Mar residence at the time. She eventually acquired the adjacent three parcels to create a huge compound with a main house plus multiple other buildings. Records indicate Pickens paid $48.2 million for all four parcels, which is a little more than the $48 million original asking price when the property was listed in January of 2019.

Designed by world-renowned architect Ken Ronchetti and built 1999, the contemporary home has 120 feet of oceanfront with a deck overlooking the beach and a glass-tiled swimming pool, as well as a 10-person jacuzzi, two guest houses, a health spa, theater, greenhouse, and many other perks. Combined, the living spaces total approximately 10,000 square feet. Bill & Melinda Gates primary reside on Lake Washington in Medina, WA, but they also own a 229-acre thoroughbred horse training center in Rancho Santa Fe, which they purchased from weight-loss entrepreneur Jenny Craig for $18 million in October 2014.
