Boxing Champion Canelo Alvarez Rumored To Be Opening Upscale Mexican Restaurant & Taco Shop In San Diego's South Bay

August 23, 2020

Rumors are swirling in San Diego's South Bay that 4-division world champion boxer Canelo Alvarez is in the process of opening an upscale Mexican restaurant and taco shop in Chula Vista.

We received information this week from a trusted tipster that world-champion professional Mexican boxer Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez has taken over the 4,200 square-foot standalone building that was previously an auto parts store at 645 Broadway in San Diego's South County city of Chula Vista to open a modern Mexican restaurant and taco eatery. Tentatively dubbed "Canelo's Taco Stand," the space is currently under construction. Alvarez was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and it is expected his eatery will serve dishes popular in the Jalisco region.

Alvarez is no stranger to San Diego. The middleweight champion previously owned a home in a gated community in Del Mar from 2013 until it was sold in late 2015. Alvarez also usually hosts his training camp for fights in San Diego. He has done so for 8 fights in a row. The 30-year-old Mexican boxer is the 4th highest paid athlete in the world.
