After 22 years operating as Boomers, the San Diego Family Fun Center will host its grand reopening this weekend in Kearny Mesa.
The parent company behind Boomers filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, resulting in the shut down of three San Diego locations, but the original owners have revived the Kearny Mesa outpost with its original name - San Diego Family Fun Center. Before becoming Boomers in 1998, the 5.5-acre site on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Interstate 805 in Kearny Mesa branch was the San Diego Family Fun Center, which was opened in 1974 by brothers John & Jim Huish. Now John Huish's sons, Scott and Shane Huish, have taken over the businesses in San Diego and will reopen the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard location with its original name on Saturday, September 5.
"We are excited to be back,"said San Diego Family Fun Center owner Scott Huish. "We love San Diego. We love its people and we are just happy to be here. We are a family business. We care about the small things, the details. We are about our guests."
The Huish family plans to invest millions of dollars to fully renovate and modernize the Kearny Mesa property but has already spent months upgrading the entertainment facility. Certain outside activities will be first to unveil including the popular go-karts and two 18-hole miniature golf courses, but the bumper boats and batting cages will not immediately reopen. The indoor arcade will receive a complete remodel and reopen later this year if permitted. Bullwinkle's Restaurant will also open for limited dine-in with a menu of pizza, burgers, sandwiches, chicken strips, fries and ice cream.
This past spring, Apex Parks Group, which owned 4 Boomers Parks locations in San Diego, announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This resulted in the closure of Boomers branches in Kearny Mesa, El Cajon and Vista, although the North County outpost did reopen for a short time. The Huish family also owns the properties in La Mesa, Vista and El Cajon where the additional Boomers locations sat. Both the Boomers in La Mesa and Vista have been essentially demolished, but the family is still deciding what to do with the mostly-intact El Cajon location.
San Diego Family Fun Center will open at 11am on September 5 at 6999 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in Kearny Mesa. The business will open from 11am to 8pm daily. For more information, visit familyFUNcenters.com.
