Cali-Aussie Restaurant Westerly Public House To Open In San Diego's Point Loma

February 5, 2021

Opening later this year as part of Point Loma's incoming, $30 million The Monsaraz Hotel is Westerly Public House, a coastal cuisine restaurant with a menu inspired by Australia and Portugal.

The first of Hilton's modern Tapestry Collection of properties to come to San Diego, The Monsaraz replaces the longstanding Dolphin Motel and is anticipated to open in Point Loma as early as this summer. The new hotel will come at an estimated cost of $30 million and boasts a Portuguese-inspired design with marina views and a full-service bar, restaurant and a "hidden" rooftop lounge and deck.

The Monsarez's 2,800 square-foot onsite restaurant is Westerly Public House, which will specialized in Cali-Aussie cuisine, showcasing the flavors and spirit of the coastal towns of Venice Beach, California and Bondi Beach, Australia. The restaurant's kitchen will be in the hands of Executive Chef Jesse Paul, who most recently owned and operated the Wooden Spoon in Escondido. Chef Paul is devoted to operating a zero waste kitchen, creating all ingredients from scratch, and crafting original dishes using local and sustainable sources. The will also be a rooftop "Hideaway" bar, which boasts views of the harbor, bay and city skyline. The Hideaway will be utilized as either an informal gathering spot or rented for private events such as receptions, bachelor/bachelorette parties, intimidate dinner parties, book clubs, etc. The hotel will also have an onsite cafe with coffee from San Diego's Dark Horse Coffee Roasters.

San Diego-based RAR Hospitality is managing The Monsaraz in partnership with Hilton. RAR Hospitality, which also oversees The Lafayette in North Park and other area properties, will own and operate The Monsaraz. Once complete, the nearly 50,000 square-foot property will have 92-rooms, views of the marina and Downtown San Diego, as well as a contemporary lobby, fitness center, outdoor garden and deck, an 800-square-foot meeting room, 4,000 square feet of outdoor event space, and an expansive courtyard that will feature a bar with an illuminated tree in the center. The property will have a Portuguese theme, paying tribute to the Portuguese settlers that landed on Point Loma in the 1500s. Los Angeles-based KNA Design is leading the interior design plan for The Monsaraz. Design features include a large fireplace, a turf area with lawn games and a play area for kids, and an outdoor lounge with a firepit featuring a 30-foot-tall mural as a backdrop. The hotel is expected to have nightly rates of around $200.

The Monsarez is expected to open at 1451 Rosecrans Street in San Diego's Point Loma community in summer 2021. For more information, visit hilton.com/en/hotels/sanplup-the-monsaraz-san-diego.
