San Diego's Ambrogio15 Team To Open Chef-Driven Semola An Ambrogio15 Gastronomy Project In La Jolla On May 22

May 14, 2021

The team behind San Diego's popular Ambrogio15 restaurant will open Semola An Ambrogio15 Gastronomy Project in the former PrepKitchen space in La Jolla on May 22.

Milan-turned-San Diego residents Giacomo Pizzigoni, Andrea Burrone and Luca Salvi opened the flagship Ambrogio15 on Turquoise Street in San Diego's North Pacific Beach community in August 2016. The team expanded in 2018 with a stall within the Little Italy Food Hall and also has plans in place for a micro-version of Ambrogio15 to debut within Del Mar Highlands Town Center's incoming, 20,000 square-foot, multi-restaurant food hall called The Sky Deck, set to open this June. The Ambrogio boys launched new concept Semola Artisan Express Pasta in the Little Italy Food Hall in 2019 but earlier this year announced they would be relocating the concept to La Jolla. On April 1, the Ambrogio team opened Italian sandwich eatery and aperitivo-driven enoteca in La Jolla called Ciao Ciao Piadina.

Earlier this year, news broke that the Ambrogio15 crew took over the indoor/outdoor space left dormant by last year's sudden and inexplicable closure of PrepKitchen in La Jolla and would be opening Semola The Ambrogio15 Pasta Bar. The concept has been tinkered and will open at 5pm on May 22 as Semola - An Ambrogio15 Gastronomy Project. The new restaurant is a collaboration with Semola's new head chef Daniela Martinez, who previously worked locally at Bracero, Ironside Fish & Oyster, Sugar and Scribe, and Civico1845's Il Dandy/Arama in Bankers Hill. Martinez was also a Food Network Chopped Grand Champion in 2019, after competing on their Sweets Showdown Tournament. The menu at Semola will feature several modern pasta dishes as well as a variety of carpaccio, risotto, fried dishes, entree plates, and desserts, all inspired by the team's hometown of Milano. There will also be a lengthy list of natural and biodynamic wines. This September, the team will also launch a chef's table experience within Semola.

"We are proud to introduce you to our new concept Semola," commented Ambrogio15 co-founder Giacomo Pizzigoni. "It’s our take on contemporary Italian cuisine and gastronomy. A fusion of different food cultures and experiences with a focus on the “raw material”, showcased by Head Chef Daniela Martinez and Michelin Star Chef Silvio Salmoiraghi. Local ingredients and small farming will be a strong focus at Semola as we deeply value what San Diego has to offer."

Semola - An Ambrogio15 Gastronomy Project is located at 7556 Fay Avenue in La Jolla. For more information, visit semolapasta.com.
