A New York City Style Delicatessen With California Influence Is Opening In Downtown San Diego

June 24, 2021

Opening later this year in San Diego's East Village is Cobblestone Delicatessen, a New York City style deli with California influence from a longtime general manager of the Cohn Restaurant Group.

Cobblestone Delicatessen is the product of Charles Schmidt, a Le Cordon Bleu French Culinary School graduate who previously worked as the general manager for Cohn Restaurant Group's Coasterra with a long stint at celebrity chef Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery & Cafe before that. The inspiration for Cobblestone came after Schmidt visited the famed Dean & DeLuca upscale grocery store in New York City and realized San Diego was missing a truly great sandwich shop.

Paying homage to New York City's cobblestone streets and vast deli history, Cobblestone Delicatessen is being designed by San Diego's Basile Studios (Born & Raised, Puesto) and will feature a fully open kitchen with seating for more than 50 inside and sidewalk tables on both F Street and 11th Avenue. The eatery will offer a lengthy list of signature, customizable and classic sandwiches, as well as breakfast dishes, salads, soups, and sides. Highlights from the sandwich menu include The Five Boroughs with crispy chicken cutlet, roasted gravy, melted mozzarella and bacon on garlic bread; the Arthur Avenue with ham, salami, prosciutto, provolone, Roma tomato, roasted red pepper, red onion, olive oil, and red wine vinegar; and The Charlie Special with grilled pastrami, melted Swiss cheese, caramelized onion and honey mustard. Cobblestone will also have a full coffee bar with blends from Cafe Moto and sell beer, wine and soft drinks.

Cobblestone Delicatessen is expected to open by year's end at 1110 F Street on the base floor of F11 Apartments in San Diego's East Village. For more information, visit cobblestonesd.com and check out the draft menu below.
