A decades-old industry-driven hotspot for Japanese fare and sushi in San Diego's East Village, Hive Sushi Lounge is now under new ownership and will begin upgrading its menu immediately to have a stronger focus on Japanese whiskey, tapas-style appetizers, and omakase specials.
Milos Jahudka has owned and operated Hive Sushi since 2000, but last month he sold the East Village-based Japanese restaurant to Brant Crenshaw and Randy Rivera, who also own Petco Park-adjacent Social Tap Eatery. Partner and Executive Chef Norbert Moniz - formerly of Born and Raised, the Pendry Hotel, Tiger Tiger & Blind Lady Alehouse - will lead the culinary charge along with Executive Sushi Chef Chris Nillaga, formerly of Saiko Sushi. Chef Moniz will bring a creative culinary mind, as well as flavor-forward small bite offerings, to complement the well-established sushi program. This will go into effect the first of the year along with a slight interior remodel of the space.
Hive Sushi Lounge has a long history in San Diego, starting as one of the original drum and bass clubs over 20 years ago. Its sushi roots have been well established over the last 15 years garnering a reputation for some of the freshest sushi in San Diego. The new owners plan to expand the sushi offerings along with an omakase chefs' menu. In addition, an expansive bar program focusing on Japanese Whisky and Sake is in the works and will be implemented in the coming months. Hive also has a private dining room able to accommodate up to 50 guests for holiday, birthday and special events, with all-inclusive packages available.
Hive Sushi Lounge is located at 1065 14th Street in San Diego's East Village. For more information, visit hivesushilounge.com.
