Popular Pacific Beach Mexican Eatery Cotija's Taco Shop Suddenly Shutters & Will Be Replaced By 664 TJ Birrieria

March 26, 2022

Widely known around San Diego for its Hashbrown breakfast burrito, Cotija's Taco Shop has shuttered in Pacific Beach after more than four decades in business and will be replaced by a location of 664 TJ Birrieria.

Cotija's Taco Shop has been a mainstay in San Diego's Pacific Beach since at least the 1980, then sited on the corner of Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive closer to the beach. The fast-casual Mexican taqueria eventually spawned multiple outlets around San Diego, which are all now under different ownership. Cotija's has been a longtime favorite in Pacific Beach, offering a lengthy menu of Mexican comfort foods, including the eatery's famed hashbrown burrito. Cotija's abruptly shuttered this week without notice and will be replaced by a branch of 664 TJ Birrieria.

664 TJ Birrieria first opened in National City in 2016 and the company now has six locations around San Diego with another opened in Las Vegas in 2019. As the name suggests, 664 specializes in birria, a shredded beef stew offered in taco form, as well as in quesadilla, bowls, piled atop tostadas, and as its own, all served with sides of consomé birria broth for dipping. Named after the Tijuana area code, the restaurant's menu also features an array of Mexican mariscos seafood dishes, like koko-aguachile featuring shrimp, octopus and coconut, a tomato seafood cocktail, shrimp ceviche, menudo, and a seafood tower, as well as flan available for dessert.

The newest location of 664 TJ Birrieria is anticipated to open by this summer at 1092 Garnet Avenue in San Diego's Pacific Beach. Follow the eatery on Facebook for more information and check out the menu below.
