Popular Small-Batch Ice Cream Brand Salt & Straw To Open Third San Diego Location

June 9, 2022

Iconic Portland-based, family-run ice cream purveyor Salt & Straw will open a third San Diego location.

A family-run venture from the start, Salt & Straw was founded in 2011 by Kim Malek and her cousin Tyler, a culinary school graduate who is the mastermind behind the ice cream. The menu is based around small-batch ice cream in unique rotating flavors (more than 300 made so far) that are prepared with seasonal produce and local cream. Flavors include Freckled Chocolate Zucchini Bread and Green Fennel & Maple - all available in cup, cone, milkshake or takeaway pint. The modern ice cream parlor currently has more than 20 locations, include a branch in San Diego's Little Italy that opened in 2017 and another within One Paseo in Del Mar.

The third San Diego branch of Salt & Straw will open within Westfield UTC mall in La Jolla as part of the under-construction The Collection at UTC, a new a 193,708 square-foot development consisting of new retail, entertainment, restaurant, and office space. Like other locations, expect a rotating menu of ice cream flavors like Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache, and Honey Lavender, as well as plenty of vegan varieties. All ice creams are churned in five to ten-gallon batches in their Southern California kitchen in Los Angeles using 100% all-natural cream from 100-year-old, family-owned Scott Brothers Dairy in Chino. Scoops are available in either cups or handmade waffle cones, in addition to milkshakes, special sundaes, and pints to go.

Salt & Straw is anticipated to start scooping at 4575 La Jolla Village Drive, Suite 1155, in San Diego's La Jolla by spring 2023. For more information, visit saltandstraw.com.
