From Team Behind Bar Kindred, Vegan Space-Themed Mothership To Open In San Diego's South Park On August 2

July 26, 2022

Opening on August 2 in the space that last housed Del Sur Mexican Cantina in San Diego's South Park is Mothership, a tropical space-themed, plant-based bar & restaurant from the owners of nearby Bar Kindred.

Kory Stetina partnered with Consortium Holding's founder Arsalun Tafazoli in 2015 to open Kindred, a death-metal-themed vegan restaurant and cocktail bar destination in San Diego's South Park neighborhood. In April 2021, the duo finalized a deal with owners of Del Sur Mexican Cantina to take over the nearby space for an out of the ordinary new concept.

Inspired as a take it and run offshoot of Kindred's weekly "Permanent Vacation" pop-up, Mothership is an exceedingly outrageous "tropical space adventure bar" featuring frequently changing wild cocktails and unique plant-based food offerings. The bar was designed by Ignacio "Notch" Gonzalez of Top Notch Kustom, who helped with the build of many popular "speakeasy" style bars including San Francisco's iconic Smuggler's Cove and Consortium Holding's False Idol speakeasy in San Diego's Little Italy. Expect a dark interior with discombobulating light installations, strange tree-like columns, and an overall trippy and immersive design inspired by a space exploration meets tiki-tropics theme. The restaurant even has its own original soundtrack, featuring nearly nine hours of "space rock" from musician Justin Pinkerton.
Mothership's rum-heavy cocktail list includes nearly 20 eclectic cocktails, including the Time Capsule punch bowl for 2 or more with French VSOP brandy, Gold Pot Still Jamaican rum, Mothership Saturnalia gin, mandarin orange liquor, California orange amaro, pineapple, lime, pistachio orgeat, passion fruit, vanilla and Kola nut bitters all in a "time capsule" ceramic bowl. The completely vegan menu from Kindred's longtime chef Dylan Craver includes shareable snacks like the Hong Kong noodle cake with Lakea broth, yellow curry tofu, grilled gai lan, roasted pineapple and toasted rice powder; and the Banana leaf tofu with Otak tofu, tomato saffron sambal, crispy shallot and lime.
In addition to Mothership, Stetina is working on another new concept set to open in the 4,500 square-foot building that last housed a community office space at 4608-10 Park Boulevard directly under the University Heights sign. The new bar and restaurant concept, possibly with a speakeasy component, remains still very much in development. Like Mothership and Kindred, expect a modern redesign with an ambitious craft cocktail list and a completely vegan menu.

Mothership will open at 2310 30th Street in San Diego's South Park neighborhood on Tuesday, August 2. For more information, visit mothershiptrip.com and check out the launch menu below.
