Garbatella Osteria Brings Roman Cuisine To San Diego's South County

January 26, 2023

Now open in San Diego's South County is Garbatella Osteria Bar, a 200+ seat Roman-inspired bar & restaurant from experienced restaurateurs.

Garbatella Osteria is owned by two husband-wife duos, Antonio Luiu and Diana Gonzalez, and Saul Plata and Carelma Rodriguez. After three decades of operating restaurants in Mexico and Canada, this is their first U.S. concept. Located in Otay Ranch Town Center, Garbatella Osteria Bar is a 206-seat restaurant that offers a full bar, event space, outdoor patio area, and Italian cafe. It features an imported Italian wood-fire pizza oven, private wine lockers and will offer frequent live music. The menu will reflect a true Italian experience and the food that Chef Antonio Luiu was raised on. Luiu-Gonzalez and Plata-Rodriguez chose Otay Ranch in Chula Vista for their first U.S. restaurant, their sixth overall, because of the strong community feeling. Otay Ranch Town Center felt like a perfect fit.

"Garbatella is the neighborhood in Rome where I lived after moving from Sardinia," explained Chef Antonio. "The Italian to English translation of our name - 'Garbata' meaning 'humble' and 'bella' meaning 'beauty' - felt like the right choice for our new home here in Chula Vista."

Garbatella Osteria's menu will include dishes like parmesan fondue, lasagna della garbata, classic carbonara, and the Antonello pizza topped with jumbo shrimp. The traditional Neapolitan pizza oven will be managed by pizzaiolos who have traveled from and were trained in Italy. In addition to nightly dinner service, Garbatella Osteria will also offer breakfast and lunch, a high-quality Italian coffee program, pastries and breads from the cafe.

Garbatella Osteria is located at 2015 Birch Road in San Diego's South County city of Chula Vista. For more information, visit garbatellaosteria.com.
