After 4 Years In Development, Fish Guts Finally Opens In San Diego's Barrio Logan

February 9, 2023

After nearly 4 years in development, an experienced local restaurateur with ties to a superstar Latin chef has opened Fish Guts fast-casual, seafood-centric taqueria in San Diego's Barrio Logan.

Chef & restaurateur Pablo Becker has experience opening restaurants in San Diego, including launching now-shuttered El Vitral in downtown San Diego and opening an outpost of Venga Venga Cantina & Tequila bar in partnership with his cousin and mentor, famed Mexican chef Richard Sandoval. After moving to Chicago for a few years to assist his cousins in the kitchens at their Windy City-based restaurants, the Mexico City-native returned to San Diego several years ago ready to bring something new to America's Finest City.

"After El Vitral, I took some time off from the industry and moved to Chicago for close to 6 years," explained Becker. "I felt like being in the kitchen cooking and was working out of my cousin's restaurants in Chicago, but I decided to come back to San Diego and give it another go."

In 2019, Becker began the process of opening Fish Guts in a 500+ square-foot corner unit in San Diego's historic Barrio Logan community. Decorated with urban graffiti with a glass storefront and indoor/outdoor seating, the menu is centered around a handful offers  signature seafood tacos developed by Becker. Highlights include the Taco Estilo Baja with Negra Modelo beer battered local white fish, Mexican coleslaw, pico de gallo, and chipotle aioli; and the Taco Al Pastor with achiote chile guajillo marinated salmon, cured onion and cilantro, pineapple slice, and salsa verde. There is also a list of beers, margaritas, beer cocktails and a small selection of wines.

Fish Guts is now open from 4-9pm Tuesday through Sunday at 2222 Logan Avenue, #1, in Barrio Logan. For more information, visit fishgutssandiego.com.
