California Wild Ales Planning Full-Scale Sour Beer Brewery For San Diego's Point Loma

April 1, 2023

San Diego’s barrel-aged sour beer specialist California Wild Ales is planning to open a new full-scale brewery in the Sports Arena area of Point Loma.

California Wile Ales was founded in 2015 by Bill DeWitt and Zack Brager, and the company's full scale brewery and tasting room opened in 2018 at 4202 Sorrento Valley Boulevard in Sorrento Valley. The company's Sorrento Valley brewery has been mostly closed since the beginning of the year. California Wild Ales markets itself as San Diego's only all barrel-aged sour brewery, offering a lineup of sour beers that are aged in American, French, and Hungarian oak barrels, as well as liquor barrels, for a minimum of nine to twelve months.

California Wild Ales is in the process of taking over the 7,000 square-foot industrial building that currently houses Five Star Fish Processing off Sherman Street in San Diego's Sports Arena area. The space will house the company's new full barrel-age brewery, as well as a tasting area with multiple taps of rotating craft beer creations for onsite consumption and takeaway. Popular sour beer flavors include Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Peach Bellini, Carlsbad Blueberry, and Rosé, made with Zinfandel grapes from Escondido. Recipes use seasonal fruits and vegetables from local San Diego farmers to produce a fresh, tart flavor profile.

California Wild Ales is expected to open its new brewery by year's end at 3826 Sherman Street in San Diego Midway District of Point Loma. For more information, visit californiawildales.com.
