The Britannia Tearooms To Open In Former Country Waffles Building In San Diego's Midway District

July 9, 2023

Taking over the former Country Waffles building in San Diego's Midway District is The Britannia Tearooms, a British-inspired high tea house with literary-themed rooms opening later this summer.

Tea aficionado Selina Stockley has been operating Shakespeare's Corner Shoppe and Afternoon Tea on India Street in San Diego's Middletown area for over two decades. Selina, who is from Surrey, England, would dream of owning her own team room while a child watching her beloved Grandma Lucy bake in the kitchen. This past spring, Stockley took over the standalone building that long housed a location of Country Waffles, which relocated to San Diego's Clairemont neighborhood earlier this year.

"Over the years I have managed to grow my tearoom and create a demand for our themed teas to the point that we have outgrown our current space," explained Selina Stockley. "Seeing how everyone enjoyed our different themes I thought how amazing it would be have a destination location that included all my favourite characters from British literature. When I walked into our new spot 5 months ago I immediately knew what each room would be. It might sound strange but it was as if the rooms were telling me what they needed to be. This unique and exciting concept will be a one of a kind tearoom screaming come visit us from our corner of Wonderland."

Dubbed The Britannia Tearooms, expect the building to have multiple themed rooms including those devoted to British literary figures like Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, and The Mad Hatter. The patio will have A Midsummer Night's Dream design and there will also be nods to The Chronicles of Narnia and Alice In Wonderland

From the menu, expect afternoon high tea service with tiered towers of finger-sandwiches and petite-fours, as well as quiche, sausage rolls, cream tea, and specialty tea flower salads, with the food options to expand as the restaurant develops. Of course, there will be plenty of tea varieties, including their specialty blend of loose tea, as well as drinks like orange blossom lemonade and lavender lemonade.

The Britannia Tearooms is anticipated to open as early as August 31 at 2323 Midway Drive in San Diego's Point Loma. For more information, visit afternoonteasandiego.com
