FIRST LOOK: Los Angeles Steakhouse Royalty Ready To Unveil Steak 48 In San Diego

September 25, 2023

The family that founded Los Angeles's iconic Mastro's Steakhouse is nearly ready to unveil Steak 48, a trendy, upscale steakhouse restaurant set to open its first San Diego location this fall.

Steak 48 is a family run, Scottsdale, AZ-based steakhouse concept founded by Dennis Mastro, his son's Jeffrey & Michael, and the family's unofficial "adopted" son Scotty Troilo, who began working at the family's original restaurant What's Your Beef in 1978. The Mastro family is most widely known for founding ritzy Los Angeles steakhouse chain Mastro's Restaurants, which was purchased by hospitality behemoth Landry's in 2013. In addition to Steak 48 - which currently has locations in Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Charlotte - the parent company Prime Steak Concepts also operates other high-end restaurants like Ocean 44, Dominick’s, and Steak 44.

The San Diego branch of Steak 48 will open this October in the 12,500 square-foot space that last housed Searsucker, as well as a sushi eatery and pilates studio, within Del Mar Highlands Town Center. After a multi-million dollar renovation of the unit, expect an elegant restaurant with a dark decor, burnt-orange booths, nine different dining rooms, and a sparkling glass-enclosed kitchen with a massive raw seafood display. The menu will be centered around USDA prime steaks and dry-aged steaks prepared from an in-house butchery, as well as fresh seafood, classically inspired side dishes & appetizers, and desserts prepared daily from an onsite pastry team. The swanky restaurant will also have a reservation-exclusive full bar and a 3,000 bottle wine vault.
Leading up to Steak 48's grand opening, a special welcome entrance to San Diego, the restaurant will be hosting soft opening hours from October 5 through 10. Each night, patrons will enjoy dinner and their check will be delivered with a bill for "zero" as Steak 48 has covered their check, and the guests may donate the amount of the bill (or any amount they wish) to the charity. The charities benefitting include the San Diego Opera, Voices for Children, Las Patronas, Rancho Santa Fe Women’s Fund, and Country Friends.
Steak 48 will grand open on October 13 at 12995 El Camino Real, Suite 21, within Del Mar Highlands Town Center in San Diego's Del Mar region. For more information, visit steak48.com.
