After Nearly 60 Years In Business, The Wrangler Family Barbecue Pit To Close In San Diego's East County

November 9, 2023

After nearly six decades serving Texas-style BBQ in San Diego's East County, The Wrangler Family Barbecue Pit has announced its impending closure.

Joe Browning and his brother in law, Ed Jenson, opened the first location of The Barbecue Pit Restaurant in the Maryland Hotel on 6th Avenue in downtown San Diego in December 1947. Over the years, the family opened several more locations of The Barbecue Pit, with locations still in operation in San Diego's Fletcher Hills and National City. Eventually, in 1965, the Jenson family branched off on their own to open The Wrangler Family Barbecue Pit on El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's East County.

"The time has come to say goodbye and retire," reads a post on The Wrangler Family Barbecue's Facebook page. "Since 1965 we have called East County our home. We will forever be grateful for your business and support and the memories made over the years."

The Wrangler Family Barbecue will serve its last meals this Sunday, November 12. The restaurant is located at 901 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's East County city of El Cajon. For more information, visit thewranglerfamilybarbecue.com.
