San Diego Barbecue Favorite Coop's West Texas BBQ Announces Impending Closure

March 14, 2024

After nearly 14 years in business, San Diego barbecue destination Coop's West Texas BBQ has announced its impending closure.

Texas transplant Bradrick "Coop" Cooper left his job as a registered nurse after more than a decade and opened the Coop's West Texas BBQ in San Diego's East County city of Lemon Grove in October 2010. The 26-seat restaurant quickly became known as one of San Diego's top destinations for low-and-slow, Texas-style barbecue. Building on the success of his barbecue eatery, Coop took over a neighboring space in 2016 and opened Da Chicken Coop fried chicken restaurant, but that concept closed several years ago.

Earlier this year, Coop launched a GoFundMe campaign with a $25,000 goal, indicating a dire need for support, but only was able to raise a little more than $3,000. He has now announced that he will be closing his restaurant after end of service this coming Sunday, March 17. Coop's West Texas BBQ has earned rave reviews over its almost 14 year tenure and was even named as one of Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S in 2014 & 2016. Most recently, Coop's was among several San Diego barbecue restaurants that received a rave review in the latest installment of TexasMonthly Magazine.

"This is really tough for the family, however we have to let go in order to move forward," read the announcement on Coop's social media. "Although the restaurant will be closing we will continue to cater and do pop-up events.. please continue to follow us on social media to stay tuned!!!   We love and appreciate all who have been supporting us for 13 YEARS.. do not worry this is not the end but a new beginning."

Coop's West Texas BBQ is located at 2625 Lemon Grove Avenue in San Diego's east county community of Lemon Grove. For more information, visit coopsbbq.com.
