Trattoria Da Sofia Now Open In Former Cucina Sorella Space In San Diego's Kensington

April 6, 2024

Now open in the space that last housed Cucina Sorella in San Diego's Kensington neighborhood is Trattoria Da Sofia, a new neighborhood-driven Italian bar and restaurant.

Tracy Borkum's Urban Kitchen Group bid farewell to its Michelin-recognized Cucina Sorella restaurant in Kensington last summer, wrapping up seven years of operation. The space was previously known as Kensington Grill for over two decades before its rebranding. Last fall, the 3,554 square-foot restaurant was taken over for the launch of a fresh Italian concept named Trattoria da Sofia.

Trattoria da Sofia is a collaborative effort involving restaurateurs hailing from San Diego, Sicily, and Mexico City, including Mariano Liga (Rusticucina), John Rudolf (Harry's Coffee), Andrea Carbonaro (Aromi), Giancarlo Guttilla (Zama), Giuseppe Lo Coco, Sofia Lo Cascio, Sebastian Berho, and Franco Mestre. Trattoria da Sofia features a menu brimming with traditional "casereccio", homemade Italian dishes.

Trattoria da Sofia offers a simple, casual design infused with traditional Italian trattoria influences. The venue houses multiple dining areas indoors and a spacious front al-fresco patio. The menu includes Italian-style appetizers, salads, homemade pasta, and entrees crafted from fresh-caught seafood and locally-sourced ingredients.

Highlights from Trattoria da Sofia's menu include Involtini di Melanzane, stuffed eggplant with ricotta, pine nuts, onion and bread crumbs served with a pomodoro sauce; Allo Scoglio fettuccine pasta with clams, mussels, shrimps, and calamari, finished with a spicy pomodoro sauce; and Spiedini Siciliana stuffed beef rolled with mozzarella cheese, bread crumbs, pomodoro sauce, and pine nuts served with rosemary roasted potatoes. The restaurant will also have a full bar with cocktails, spritzes, wine, and beer.

Trattoria da Sofia is now open at 4055 Adams Avenue in San Diego's Kensington community. For more information, visit
