Eppig Brewing Closes Tasting Room In San Diego's East Village

After around a half-year in business, Eppig Brewing has closed its Petco Park-adjacent tasting room in San Diego's East Village. The closure marks another chapter in a series of operational changes since the craft brewery entered a strategic partnership last year.

Founded in 2016 by Stephanie Eppig, her husband Todd Warshaw, and brewer Clayton LeBlanc, Eppig Brewing was established to honor the brewing legacy of Stephanie's great-grandfather, who operated a massive brewery in Brooklyn, NY, in the late 1800s before Prohibition forced its closure. The brewery initially launched in San Diego's North Park, later expanding to a waterfront Biergarten in Shelter Island and a larger brewing facility in Vista. However, recent management changes have brought significant shifts to the company’s operations.

Last fall, Eppig Brewing gave up operational control to Tableside Partners, the hospitality division of Newport-based West Coast Ventures & Resources. Under this partnership, Eppig quickly shuttered its La Jolla Village tasting room in late 2023 and later announced the closure of its Vista tasting room at its headquarters. Although two locations have closed, Eppig continues to operate a tasting room in Vista in collaboration with Mason Ale Works, Second Chance Brewing, and others. The company also launched the now-closed East Village tasting room in time for the 2024 Padres season, taking over the space previously occupied by Stone Brewing.

Founded by Randy Teffeteller in 2006, West Coast Ventures & Resources is a consulting group involved in various industries, including waste management, pest control, seafood distribution, and hospitality. The company has faced criticism for its handling of hospitality businesses, particularly under its Tableside Partners division.

West Coast Ventures was previously accused of mismanaging TAPS Fish House & Brewery, a once-renowned Southern California-based seafood chain and craft brewery. TAPS, which grew to five locations, filed for bankruptcy in summer 2023 amid a $30 million financial collapse. Following public accusations, TAPS founder Joe Manzella has since filed a lawsuit against Teffeteller, West Coast Ventures, and Tableside Partners, alleging Breach of Fiduciary Duty, Gross Negligence, and other claims related to the company’s downfall.

In San Diego, all hospitality businesses previously operated by 3 Local Brothers (3LB), including Urge Gastropub, have closed since coming under Tableside Partners' control. Only one Urge Gastropub remains operational in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Despite the closures, Eppig Brewing remains committed to its core operations and may still utilize the East Village space for events. The company’s Shelter Island Biergarten and collaborative Vista tasting room continue to operate, offering Eppig’s award-winning beers to loyal patrons.

The East Village tasting room, located at 795 J Street, was a promising addition, offering Eppig beers to Padres fans and the bustling downtown area. Its closure raises questions about the brewery’s future trajectory under West Coast Ventures’ management.
