San Diego Police responded to a violent altercation near 27th and L Streets on Friday, November 22. Duarte, a 36-year-old father and soon-to-be grandfather, suffered fatal injuries, including a stab wound and head trauma. Despite CPR efforts and being rushed to a nearby hospital, Duarte did not survive. The suspects, identified as a 37-year-old man and his 17-year-old son, were taken into custody at the scene.
The father, Emilio Torres Valencia, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries received during the altercation and later booked into County Jail. His son was taken to Juvenile Hall. However, both men have since been released from custody. The District Attorney has not issued charges pending additional investigation.
In addition to being a full-time dental assistant, Duarte, affectionately known as "Mo," was a cherished member of the Basic Bar & Pizza team, which recently closed its original East Village location after nearly two decades of operation. Mo was known as a friendly face that was loved by customers and fellow employees alike. Mo's tragic passing has cast a shadow over this period of transition for the business.
Basic Bar & Pizza expressed its heartbreak in a statement shared on social media, describing Duarte as "one of the kindest, happiest, and most supportive people we have known." The statement called on the community to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign to support his family, highlighting the financial strain and emotional toll of this devastating loss.
The GoFundMe campaign outlines the immense challenges facing Duarte's family, including his wife, three children, and an unborn grandchild. Funds raised will assist with funeral expenses and help the family regain stability during this unimaginable time. "Mo was the backbone of his family, always putting others before himself," the campaign states, underscoring his dedication as a provider and his love for creating lasting memories with his loved ones.
Basic Pizza's legacy as a longstanding part of San Diego's culinary scene, combined with Duarte’s integral role in its success, has spurred the community to rally in support. The hope is that, through collective generosity, his family can find some solace amidst their grief.
Donations can be made via the GoFundMe campaign, where every contribution - big or small - will make a difference in honoring Duarte's memory and supporting his family. The campaign serves as a reminder of the strength and compassion of the San Diego community during times of loss.
