San Diego's Nearest Ski & Snowboard Destinations To Hit The Snow During The Winter Months

Ski season has arrived! While San Diego's sun-soaked beaches might make snow seem like a distant dream, winter enthusiasts know that living in Southern California means you're just a short drive from some incredible ski resorts. Whether you're dusting off your gear for a quick day trip or planning a week-long mountain escape, there are plenty of options to satisfy your craving for snow.

From family-friendly slopes to adrenaline-pumping terrain parks, here are seven fantastic ski and snow board destinations within a driving distance from San Diego:

Big Bear Mountain (Big Bear Lake) - Southern California's most popular ski resort, Big Bear Mountain, is a haven for adrenaline seekers. Known for its 14 terrain parks spread across three peaks, it offers challenging runs, freestyle features, and the tallest peak at 8,805 feet. While 15% of its terrain is beginner-friendly, it's best suited for intermediate to advanced skiers. Lodging options range from cozy cabins to eco-friendly spots like Big Bear Adventure Lodge, perfect for an adventurous getaway. A bonus: lift passes grant access to neighboring Snow Summit.
Snow Summit (Big Bear Lake) - Neighboring Big Bear Mountain, Snow Summit is a family-friendly choice with 31 trails, a tubing park, and terrain perfect for intermediates. Advanced skiers can test their skills on double black diamond chutes, while the entire family can enjoy panoramic views from Hog on the Rocks, where great food and mountain vistas await. With its smaller size, Snow Summit is an ideal destination for a relaxed weekend, and lift passes are valid for Big Bear Mountain as well.

Snow Valley Mountain (Running Springs) - Just under three hours from San Diego, Snow Valley is perfect for families and beginners. Its Children’s Learning Center offers lessons for kids, while adults can enjoy varied slopes and freestyle features at the Park Avenue terrain park. Advanced skiers will appreciate its black runs, though the resort's 240 acres can be covered quickly. While lodging isn't available on-site, nearby Running Springs offers accommodations for every budget.

Rim Nordic Ski Area (San Bernardino Mountains) - Located across from Snow Valley on Highway 18, is Southern California's only cross-country ski resort with machine-groomed trails for Nordic skiing, ski-skating, and snowshoeing. It offers lessons, rentals, and a serene alternative to the busier downhill resorts. While there’s no on-site restaurant, a small shop sells snacks and gear, with dining and lodging available nearby in Running Springs or 20 minutes away at Big Bear Lake. In summer, the area hosts mountain biking and trail running events, making it a year-round outdoor destination.
Mt. Baldy (Near Los Angeles) - At around 2.5 hours from San Diego, Mt. Baldy provides steep chutes and tight tree runs, ideal for advanced skiers. Beginners and intermediates can find a few trails, but the resort's lower slopes are primarily black runs. For the best snow quality, stick to Chair 3's north-facing terrain. Despite its smaller size, Mt. Baldy offers a mix of challenges and scenic views, making it a convenient option for a quick ski trip.

Mt. Pinos Nordic Skiing (San Emigdio Mountains) - This is a bring-your-own adventure for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing enthusiasts. Located in Ventura County about four hours from San Diego, this rustic spot lacks lifts, rentals, and amenities - aside from portable toilets and a volunteer-run Nordic base station on weekends. The area's trails offer serene, snow-covered landscapes but require a National Forest Adventure Pass, available locally or at Big 5 Sporting Goods stores. Check weather and road conditions before visiting, as snow can impact access to this quiet, back-to-nature escape just 90 minutes from Los Angeles.

Mountain High (Wrightwood) - Nestled in the Angeles National Forest, Mountain High is one of Southern California's oldest ski resorts. Its 14 lifts serve three distinct areas: North Resort for ski lessons, East Resort for wide blues, and West Resort for steep blacks and freestyle features. Night skiing is available, and the North Pole Tubing Park adds to its family-friendly appeal. Located 2.5 hours from San Diego, it’s a great choice for a day trip with minimal traffic.
Mt. Waterman (San Gabriel Mountains) - Over 80 years old, Mt. Waterman offers a quieter alternative to larger resorts. With three chairlifts and slopes rising to 8,030 feet, it’s perfect for those seeking uncrowded trails and serene powder days. The Upper Bowl and tree-lined trails provide a scenic challenge, while The Warming Hut offers hot chocolate or whiskey by a cozy fire.

Mammoth Mountain (Mammoth) - A premier California destination, Mammoth Mountain boasts over 400 inches of annual snowfall and varied terrain for all skill levels. At 11,053 feet, its summit offers unmatched views and thrilling runs. Beyond skiing, guests can enjoy tubing, snowmobiling, and luxurious slope-side accommodations. Though it’s a 6-hour 45-minute drive from San Diego, flights are available for quicker access.

June Mountain (June Lake) - Just 30 minutes from Mammoth, June Mountain is a family-friendly option with a relaxed atmosphere. Known for its seven lifts and affordable dining, it’s ideal for beginners and locals alike. Its proximity to Yosemite National Park adds to its scenic charm, making the 6-hour 45-minute drive from San Diego well worth it.

Southern California may not scream "winter wonderland," but these nearby ski resorts prove that you don’t have to travel far to enjoy a snowy escape. Pack your gear, plan your route, and make this winter one to remember. See you on the slopes, San Diego!
