Odie’s Pizza Opens In San Diego's North County, Bringing Artisanal Sourdough Pies & SoCal Vibes To The Coast

A self-proclaimed "dough nerd" has returned to his roots to elevate San Diego's pizza game with the launch of Odie's Pizza, a new slice-and-pie shop bringing handcrafted sourdough pizzas - traditional, gluten-free, and vegan - to North County.

San Diego native Odie O’Connor has officially opened his namesake pizzeria in the 2,000-square-foot building that previously housed Sublime Tap House, just two blocks from the beach in Oceanside. It’s a project born of serendipity and collaboration, uniting O'Connor’s deep pizza know-how with the business acumen of Encinitas-based Blacktop Restaurant Group - the team behind Board & Brew, Casero Taqueria, and Pure Taco.

O'Connor made the move back to San Diego from Portland, Oregon, where he ran Boxcar Pizza, a plant-based pizzeria known for gluten-free and vegan-friendly pies that didn’t compromise on texture or taste. He also brought back with him a 35-year-old heirloom sourdough starter that forms the base of Odie’s naturally fermented crusts.

At Odie’s Pizza, sourdough takes center stage. The crust - fermented for 48 hours - is airy, digestible, and available in New York- and Sicilian-style forms, with a dedicated focus on plant-based and gluten-free alternatives. The menu features 16-inch round pies, square grandma-style pizzas, wings, salads, and sweet treats like milkshakes, soft serve cones, and housemade ice cream sandwiches.

Creative pizzas include the "Dude Ranch", a California-style BBQ chicken homage; "Good Good Things", a white pie with ricotta and basil; the vodka sauce–based "Rebel Rebel"; "Biggie Smalls" with sausage and grated parmesan; and the hot honey-drizzled "Benny and the Jets." There's also a pineapple-pepperoni-jalapeño combo dubbed "Viktor Vaughn" and several pies named after punk and emo classics.

Odie's isn’t just about pizza. The space boasts high ceilings, a wrap-around counter, retractable windows, and indoor-outdoor seating that embodies the laid-back coastal lifestyle. Walls are adorned with surf photography by Grant Brittain and skateboards from icons like Tony Hawk and Steve Caballero - giving the joint an aesthetic that's part New York City, part Southern California skate culture.

With 28 taps, the former beer bar location remains true to its roots, now pouring a rotating lineup from local breweries including Artifex, Black Plague, Pure Project, Pizza Port, and even a Burgeon collab IPA made with the guidance of O'Connor himself. The vibe? Chill enough for a solo slice after the beach or a family-friendly hang with kids enjoying soft serve and adults sipping local brews.

Odie’s Pizza is now open at 121 North Cleveland Street in San Diego's North County city of Oceanside. For more information, visit odiespizza.com
