Founded by Kaylee and Crystal Clark, two former bartenders who chose to give up alcohol after recovering from their third round of COVID-19, Good News is a labor of love born from personal transformation. Frustrated with the drinking culture ingrained in their former profession, the Clarks committed to helping one another navigate sobriety - and eventually realized they could do the same for the broader community.
The unique venue aims to offer a welcoming, sober space for people of all backgrounds and drinking preferences, including those in recovery, the sober-curious, and anyone seeking healthier social alternatives. The bar will operate with limited hours during its soft opening phase, running daily from 4 to 10pm and remaining closed on Tuesdays until August 1. The 18+ venue charges no cover and encourages patience as it works out operational kinks ahead of its full-scale debut.
Unlike conventional bars that relegate mocktails to the bottom of a menu, Good News places non-alcoholic offerings at the forefront. The space will serve a curated lineup of alcohol-free beer, zero-proof wine, spirit alternatives, functional beverages with adaptogens and nootropics, and other inventive concoctions from local and national brands including Curious Elixirs, Three Spirit, and Best Day Brewing Co.
But Good News aims to be more than a bar - it's a social hub. Guests can expect trivia nights, live music, dance parties with rotating DJs, and an inclusive atmosphere that invites connection without the pressure to drink. The founders envision it as a much-needed third space - somewhere between home and work - for people to gather, celebrate, and unwind, free of alcohol and its social expectations.
Hillcrest, long recognized as one of San Diego's most LGBTQ+ inclusive neighborhoods, is a fitting home for the queer- and woman-owned venture. Opening during Pride Weekend adds symbolic weight to the bar’s mission of community, inclusion, and wellness.
While the concept of a dry bar may raise eyebrows in a city known for its craft beer and nightlife scene, Good News signals a growing shift. As more people seek balance in their social lives, the demand for thoughtful, alcohol-free spaces is on the rise - and now, San Diego has a place leading that charge.
Good News will open on Friday, July 18, from 4 to 10pm at 3821 Park Boulevard in San Diego's Hillcrest. For more information, visit goodnewssd.com.
