On October 12, Crenn will team up with Oceanside’s own William Eick, chef and owner of Matsu, for a one-night-only tasting dinner showcasing a fusion of French and Japanese techniques. Crenn, who was born in France and raised in Brittany, rose to prominence through her flagship San Francisco restaurant Atelier Crenn, which earned its third Michelin star in 2018. She is known for her poetic culinary style and dedication to sustainability and ethical sourcing.
Her career has included notable television appearances on Chef’s Table, Iron Chef America, and Top Chef, and she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2024. In addition to Atelier Crenn, she also operates Petit Crenn, Bar Crenn, and Paris’s Golden Poppy, and in 2021, she served as culinary consultant for the feature film The Menu.
Now, Crenn brings her expertise to Matsu, a restaurant many local food lovers believe deserves a Michelin star of its own. Since opening in 2021, Matsu has offered a refined, multi-course tasting experience focused on modern Japanese cuisine. Eick and his team highlight seasonal and locally foraged ingredients, merging Japanese tradition with Southern California’s natural bounty. The October 12 dinner will reflect both chefs’ philosophies, although specific menu details have not yet been released.
The ticketed event underscores the rising culinary reputation of Oceanside and San Diego’s North County, and offers local diners a rare opportunity to experience dishes crafted by two acclaimed chefs at the height of their craft. Tickets will be limited and available through Matsu’s website and social channels.
Matsu is located at 626 South Tremont Street in Oceanside. For more information, visit www.eatatmatsu.com.
