The brand will debut later this year in the former Hongyuan Kebab space in the heart of Kearny Mesa’s bustling Convoy District. That site is part of a small plaza that also houses the original Tajima ramen shop, The Friendly, Steamy Piggy, Jomaru Hot Pot, and Song Hak Korean BBQ.
Founded in Osaka in 1999, Beard Papa’s has grown to more than 400 locations in over a dozen countries, earning an international following for its signature cream puffs. Customers can customize their treats by choosing from a variety of shells and fillings, ranging from classic vanilla custard to rotating seasonal flavors. The chain also offers other desserts like cheesecake, chocolate fondant, and specialty beverages.
Beard Papas says the upcoming San Diego opening will feature grand opening giveaways, including free cream puffs, special combination sets, and branded merchandise. A sweepstakes running from August 12 to September 12 will award prizes to 20 winners, with all entrants receiving a voucher for a free original puff with purchase on opening day. The contest is open to San Diego County residents, with winners notified by email.
The move to Kearny Mesa comes just over a year after Beard Papa's exited the La Jolla market, where it operated from early 2022 until mid-2024. The La Jolla space was ultimately taken over by a branch of Le Parfait Paris. With the Convoy District’s reputation as a regional hub for Asian dining and dessert culture, Beard Papa's appears poised for a warmer reception in its second San Diego venture.
Beard Papa's is expected to open this fall at 4488 Convoy Street, Suite E, in San Diego's Kearny Mesa. For more information, visit beardpapas.com.
