Founder and three-time James Beard Award semifinalist Carl Schroeder said selling wasn't on his radar until the Brusts presented a plan to invest in the restaurant’s future and honor its traditions. "This is a passion project born from their love for the restaurant," Schroeder said, adding that with the existing culinary team in place, MARKET will maintain the standards that defined it from day one.
Chef de Cuisine John Thompson - who has worked with Schroeder since their Arterra days and helped open MARKET in 2006 - will continue to lead the kitchen. The Brusts say guests can expect continuity on the plate and in the dining room, paired with thoughtful enhancements intended to elevate the overall experience.
Planned improvements include expanded opening hours, a broadened wine program, and refreshed interiors, all designed to complement MARKET’s intimate setting. “We are honored to steward such a cherished restaurant,” said Monica Brust. “Our goal is to build on the strong foundation Carl and the team created and deliver a warm, memorable experience for every guest.”
Since opening, MARKET has earned national and regional accolades for seasonal, locally sourced cuisine and polished hospitality. The restaurant has been recognized by the Michelin Guide and holds Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, with praise from outlets including Bon Appétit, Gourmet, Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, San Diego Magazine, and Ranch & Coast.
Fans can expect a seamless continuation of what MARKET is known for: a menu that evolves with local farms, an award-winning wine list, a respected cocktail program, and the familiar service style of its long-tenured staff. The restaurant remains a go-to for special occasions and date nights, a status it has held for nearly twenty years.
MARKET Restaurant + Bar is located at 3702 Via De La Valle in Del Mar and is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday from 5pm to close. For more information, visit marketdelmar.com.
