Former Nobu Chef To Bring Momo Sando & Omakase To San Diego's Mira Mesa

A new Japanese concept from a former Nobu chef is opening in San Diego next month as Momo Sando & Omakase prepares to take over the former Kumo space in Mira Mesa.

Momo Sando & Omakase is the debut independent project from executive sushi chef Changjin Oh, whose résumé includes multiple Nobu locations and a pivotal role on the opening team at Nobu Del Coronado. The new restaurant reflects his desire to offer a refined omakase experience in a more accessible format, pairing premium fish and traditional techniques with quick-service convenience. Chef Oh and his wife, who co-own the business, describe the concept as a way to bring high-quality craftsmanship to everyday dining without losing the spirit of a sushi counter.

The menu will feature a mix of elegantly prepared omakase boxes and Japanese sandos made with fresh ingredients, soft milk bread, and thoughtfully layered fillings. While the restaurant will specialize in grab-and-go orders rather than full table service, the team aims to maintain the same meticulous attention to detail expected in a traditional sushi setting. Customers will be able to pick up specialty dishes designed for immediate enjoyment, with the option to eat outdoors on the shopping plaza’s communal patio.

The new restaurant arrives as the previous tenant, Kumo, remains closed “until further notice” according to its social media — leaving a notable gap in the neighborhood’s Japanese dining options. Momo Sando & Omakase hopes to fill that void by offering something both familiar and distinctly new for the densely populated Mira Mesa community, which includes residents, office workers, students and steady retail foot traffic.

The space itself is being refreshed to accommodate an efficient production line while keeping the interior contemporary and welcoming. Though not intended for extended sit-down meals, the layout will allow small groups to stop in, order quickly, and enjoy their food nearby.

For Chef Oh, the opening represents a personal milestone: a first restaurant of his own, shaped by years in world-class kitchens but adapted to modern dining patterns. For Mira Mesa, it adds yet another distinctive option to a neighborhood already known for its rich blend of Asian cuisines.

Momo Sando & Omakase is expected to open in early January at 6755 Mira Mesa Blvd, Suite 108, in San Diego's Mira Mesa. For more information, follow @momosando_omakase on Instagram
