Infant Found Dead Inside Portable Restroom Outside The Dana Hotel In San Diego's Mission Bay Area, Prompting Homicide Investigation

San Diego police have launched a pediatric death investigation after the body of an infant boy was discovered Monday afternoon inside a portable restroom outside The Dana Hotel in Mission Bay - a disturbing incident that has stunned parkgoers and raised urgent questions about how the child ended up there.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the 911 call came in at 1:27pm from a contractor performing routine waste removal on a row of restrooms near 1600 West Mission Bay Drive at Dana Landing/Sunset Point. The worker opened one of the porta-potties and immediately contacted authorities after finding the infant unresponsive inside.

San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel, city lifeguards, and police officers responded within minutes, but paramedics pronounced the child dead shortly after arrival. SDPD says the boy’s identity, as well as that of his parents or caregivers, remains unknown.

Although early details are limited, the unusual circumstances triggered notification of the SDPD Homicide Unit, which has assumed responsibility for the case and is treating the death as suspicious pending autopsy findings and additional investigative steps.

The discovery occurred in a heavily trafficked area of Mission Bay used daily by families, boaters, tourists, and recreation groups. Police have not indicated how long the infant may have been inside the unit, whether there were signs of trauma, or if nearby surveillance footage captured any relevant activity. Detectives are urging anyone who was in the area Monday morning or early afternoon - especially those who may have noticed someone entering or leaving the portable restrooms - to come forward.

“This is a tragic and deeply concerning case, and we are seeking any information that may help identify the infant or the circumstances surrounding his death,” the department said in a statement.

Community members with information, including observations from the surrounding parking lots, docks, bike paths, or play areas, are asked to contact SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619.531.2293 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 888.580.8477.
