Global Chinese Food Chain With More Than 15,000 Locations, Jue Wei Food Closes In San Diego As New ‘LA Hot Duck’ Concept Moves Into Convoy Location

A Chinese snack shop that debuted on Convoy Street less than two years ago has already shuttered, with signage now indicating the space will soon reopen under a new concept centered around braised duck specialties.

Jue Wei Food, which opened in late 2024 at 4698 Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa, has closed its San Diego location. The storefront is now being prepared for a replacement concept called LA Hot Duck, a brand with an existing location in Rowland Heights in Los Angeles County’s San Gabriel Valley.

The shift appears to bring the Convoy storefront closer to the type of concept Jue Wei was originally expected to offer: a display-style Chinese snack shop specializing in braised duck parts and other savory street food favorites. Photos taken inside the space show stainless steel trays filled with braised meats under heat lamps, alongside a menu listing a variety of duck and chicken parts sold by the pound. Items visible on the Chinese-language menu include spicy chicken wings, chicken feet, chicken racks, duck wings, duck necks, and gizzards, along with other braised snacks commonly found in Chinese “luwei” style shops.

Other menu sections feature vegetables and offal-based snacks such as spicy lotus root, tofu skin, kelp knots, bamboo shoots, and sliced beef products, most typically seasoned with the numbing and spicy “mala” flavor profile made famous by Sichuan peppercorn.

Jue Wei Food originally arrived on Convoy with a similar premise. The shop offered braised duck heads, necks, wings, and gizzards alongside Chinese snack staples like pig ears, pork stomach, quail eggs, and lotus root. Displayed in refrigerated cases, the items were designed to be ordered by weight and taken to-go, a format common in Chinese snack markets.

The San Diego outpost was operated independently and was not formally affiliated with the massive China-based Jue Wei chain, which has more than 15,000 locations across Asia. Despite initial curiosity from diners, the shop appeared to experiment with several formats during its short run, at times offering skewers and even hot pot service before ultimately closing.

Convoy Street has long been San Diego’s primary hub for Chinese regional cuisine, and the arrival of another SGV-style snack shop would continue a trend of Los Angeles concepts expanding south to San Diego in recent years. Work inside the space appears to still be underway, and no opening date for LA Hot Duck has yet been announced. The location sits within the Convoy Plaza Del Sol shopping center, which also houses China Max and other Asian dining businesses.

LA Hot Duck is expected to open at 4698 Convoy Street, Suite 107 in San Diego’s Kearny Mesa neighborhood. For more information, visit lahotduck.com.
