The incident reportedly occurred Wednesday evening, June 24, during a crowded watch party for the Mexico versus Czechia soccer match at Park 101, the sprawling multi-level restaurant, bar, and entertainment venue in the heart of Carlsbad Village.
Video first shared by Instagram user @tannn.da.man begins during what appears to be a confrontation outside the popular restaurant and bar. A shirtless young man is standing near the entrance when a uniformed security guard suddenly raises what appears to be a conducted electrical weapon and discharges it from point-blank range directly at the man's face.
The young man immediately collapses to the ground, writhing in obvious pain as security personnel remain standing nearby. Because the video was uploaded with music replacing the original audio, it is impossible to hear what was said before the confrontation or determine what events led up to the apparent use of force.
Later in the same video, the same security guard is seen with his hands restrained behind his back while being escorted away from the scene by Carlsbad police officers.
As of publication, it remains unclear whether the security guard was arrested, detained for questioning, or later released. The identity and medical condition of the man struck by the apparent taser discharge have not been released, and it is unknown whether he required hospitalization.
The video has quickly generated widespread discussion online, with viewers questioning whether the apparent use of force was justified and whether firing a conducted electrical weapon at such close range complied with accepted security or law enforcement practices.
Park 101 has become one of North County San Diego's most recognizable hospitality destinations since opening in 2017. Developed by local partners Peter Cich, Doug Sondomowicz, and Rob McShea, the nearly 8,000-square-foot venue transformed a prominent corner of Carlsbad Village into a multi-level entertainment complex featuring barbecue, multiple bars, rooftop seating, live music, and expansive indoor-outdoor gathering spaces. The venue regularly hosts sporting events, concerts, community gatherings, and holiday celebrations, drawing thousands of visitors throughout the year.
Known for its family-friendly atmosphere during the day and lively nightlife after dark, Park 101 has become one of the busiest gathering spots along Carlsbad Boulevard, making the apparent confrontation particularly shocking for many longtime patrons.
SanDiegoVille has reached out to Park 101 ownership seeking comment regarding the incident, including what led to the confrontation, whether the security guard remains employed, whether the guard worked directly for Park 101 or through a contracted security company, and whether management believes the apparent use of force complied with company policy.
The following statement was sent via email from Park 101 co-owner Peter Cich:
"The video is deeply disturbing, and what it shows does not reflect Park 101 or any of our establishments. The safety of our guests has always been our highest priority.
Park 101 is, first and foremost, a family restaurant, and we rarely utilize security personnel of this kind. Due to the increased crowds associated with the World Cup matches, we retained additional event security through a third-party company specifically to help keep guests safe during an unusually busy period. That makes what occurred even more difficult to process, as it is the exact opposite of why those personnel were brought in.
The individual involved is no longer working at our property, and we are terminating our relationship with that security vendor. We are cooperating fully with the Carlsbad Police Department and conducting our own internal review of how event security is selected, vetted, staffed, and trained.
Right now, our focus is on the wellbeing of our guests. We are committed to learning from this incident and taking the necessary steps to ensure something like this does not happen again."
"Carlsbad Police officers responded to the 3000 block of Carlsbad Boulevard at approximately 8:26 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, after being flagged down regarding an altercation involving a security guard and a patron. The investigation determined that during the incident, a security guard allegedly deployed a stun gun during the altercation. The adult male was evaluated by the Carlsbad Fire Department and transported to a local hospital for treatment.Officers arrested 42-year-old David Marquez of San Marcos on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a stun gun.The incident remains under investigation. We are continuing to review all available evidence and have no additional information to release at this time. The case number is 26-03269."
