The ruler of plant-based, fast casual fare, Native Foods Café, is up and running full speed at its second San Diego location in Loma Square at 3369 Rosecrans St. in Point Loma. Native serves fresh, chef crafted vegan cuisine, made from scratch daily on location, including protein-packed superstars tempeh and seitan. And you might be surprised by this not-so-little stat - 85% of Native diners are neither vegan nor vegetarian. We recently stopped into Native to sample some of the menu items and were pleased by the delicious offerings and extreme value - everything is under $10!

Zenbu to Close in La Jolla

Zenbu La Jolla will serve its last sushi and sake this Saturday, May 31. After 14 years in the La Jolla community, the Japanese restaurant will shutter in order to prepare and open a new location. No word yet on the reason for the closure or where the next location will be, but the Zenbu in Cardiff-by-the-Sea will remain open. Zenbu opened in 2000 at 7660 Fay Ave. as an expansion of Matt Rimel's Rimel's Rotisserie

The team behind La Jolla’s popular Whisknladle as well as three thriving Prepkitchen locations has just announced their newest concept, Catania, an Italian Coastal restaurant, set to open in La Jolla in early 2015. The 3,750-square-foot restaurant will be located on the top floor of the La Plaza building that’s currently under redevelopment at the corner of Wall Street and Girard in the building that formerly housed Jack’s La Jolla. The building at 7863 Girard Ave has sat almost completely vacant since Jack’s closed suddenly in July 2009, victim to a tough economy and an employee embezzlement scandal.

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real will headline the 35th annual free outdoor festival, produced in association with the legendary Belly Up Tavern. Fiesta Del Sol - North County’s annual summer kick-off festival hosted by the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce, continues its tradition of presenting an fun-filled mix of national and local talent on Saturday May 31 and Sunday June 1.  An all-ages event that features more than 20 bands over two days, also has a little something for everyone with arcade rides, arts and crafts, food, and a 21+ beer garden.  The event takes place adjacent to Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, California within the area bordered by South Sierra Avenue and Acacia Avenue.

Less than a year after being hired to take then-departing chef Paul McCabe's position as Executive Chef of the La Valencia Hotel, Chef Daniel Barron has announced that he and "the Pink Lady" are no more as of Monday, May 26. Chef Daniel has assisted in the revamp of the hotel's dining options, including a modernization of the Mediterranean Room and the construction of a new bistro concept - Cafe La Rue.
