The Smoking Goat To Open Sister Concept This Spring | One Door North To Debut At Former Mosaic Wine Bar Space

January 26, 2016

Husband and wife duo Executive Chef Fred & Tammy Piehl of Piehl Restaurant Group have operated  the popular, French-inspired The Smoking Goat in North Park since 2010. In response to The Smoking Goat’s overwhelming success, the Piehl Restaurant Group is expanding, venturing into the space next door to launch an entirely new concept, One Door North, serving farm fresh small plates and seasonal fare in an approachable setting with a design nod to discovery and adventure. One Door North will debut this March/April in the space that formerly housed Mosaic Wine Bar.

Perched near the corner of 30th Street & Upas, One Door North’s design esthetic will come together through the collaboration of various San Diego-based consultants including hospitality architecture and design group OBR, marketing specialist Dana Williams, and boutique design studio Murfey Design. Upon completion in March/April, the 5,000 sq. ft. restaurant will offer a more laid-back vibe in relation to the Piehl’s neighboring sister restaurant The Smoking Goat. The inspiration behind the design will pay tribute to the great outdoors while complementing Chef Fred’s enthusiasm for culinary discovery and exploration.

Upon entry, a 25-ft ramp lit by vintage lanterns hanging overhead will lead guests to three distinct dining areas that are tied together through rustic elements of wood, steel, and brick. A color palette of deep forest greens, warm creams and soft brown leathers accent the entire space lending itself to an inviting and intimate dining experience.

A street facing dining area in the front of the building will offer diners an open and airy setting with communal picnic-style tables and floor to ceiling windows retracting upward to create a sense of connection between those dining and the energy of 30th street. Moving toward the middle of the space, an iron and brick laden bar will encourage a social environment with casual high-top seating, soft lighting, and multiple flat screen TVs. The live-edge solid wood bartop will act as a natural centerpiece in this area, where patrons can gather for a drink and strike up conversations with neighbors.

The back dining area will be flanked with three 11-foot-tall, safari-style canvas tents that serve as dramatic semi-private dining spaces for groups of six to eight, or can be connected to create one large linear dining room for larger parties. Each tent features handpicked chandeliers and a unique theme, drawing inspiration from the mountains of California to the greenery of the Northwest. Floor to ceiling graphics of forest imagery on the back wall will showcase elements from nature in the space, fully emerging guests into an ambiance of adventure and the great outdoors.

Inspired by his farm-to-table upbringing and culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Executive Chef and Co-owner Fred Piehl marries French cuisine with the bounty of San Diego at the couple’s original concept which opened in 2010, The Smoking Goat. Serving a menu that is both imaginative yet unpretentious, diners are known to be treated to seasonal dishes that have a local, sustainable and organic emphasis.
