Longtime friends launched craft beer catering service Tap Truck in Fall 2016, offering San Diegans a mobile service built from a collection of old vintage trucks that have been installed with tap systems so that they can serve ice-cold beer or wine on tap. The company, which has also operated Corbin's Q food truck since 2013, will soon combine their projects with the opening of Tap Truck BBQ at 6548 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's College Area.
Tap Truck was launched by then 25-year-olds and lifelong friends Taylor Steers and Corbin O’Reilly in October 2016, offering a fleet of vintage and classic beer trucks that have been outfitted with custom kegerator systems ready to pour beer and wine at events from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. O'Reilly hoped to build on the hospitality experience he received through catering with his food truck Corbin’s Q barbecue, which can frequently be found at area farmers markets. Both being from San Luis Obispo and settling in San Diego, the duo combined their passion for beer, BBQ, and classic cars, and decided to pair the three creating something special for any party. Now the partners are ready to take their mobile concepts to a brick-and-mortar with the opening of Tap Truck BBQ.
Tap Truck BBQ is a combination of Tap Truck Brewing and Corbin's Q. The restaurant will have a custom made open flamed Santa Maria Style BBQ grill and smoker directly in front of the shop. Using dry-rubbed meats cooked over red oak, the menu will offer tri-tip, baby back ribs, barbecue chicken, smoked sausage, pulled pork, along with sides like classic slaw, ranch-style baked beans, mac n' cheese, loaded BBQ fries & nachos, and other homey comfort food dishes and desserts. There will also be combination platters and sandwich offerings.
The restaurant will also offer an outside patio with extra communal seating and an al fresco beer/wine bar. One of the company's vintage tap trucks will be stationed permanently as the bar concept pouring both select beers and wines. There will also be a 3 barrel brewing system at the shop with house-brewed beers being sold only in-house or at offsite tap truck events. Tap Truck BBQ's brewers are currently brewing at Mission Brewery in downtown San Diego. Tap Truck BBQ hopes to open by the end of October, and both Corbin's BBQ and Tap Truck will continue to do farmers markets, food catering, and beverage catering.
Tap Truck is also in the process of expanding to other cities, offering a licensing agreement so people can start their own mobile beer catering trucks. The agreement includes having the company help with the sourcing and buildout of trucks, as well as assistance with legalities and overall management. The company currently has trucks in San Luis Obispo CA, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and soon Poland. Corbin and Taylor are in the process of building a couple old vintage Chevy trucks to have shipped to the Eastern European country.
