Since opening its first U.S. location earlier this year in San Diego's Kearny Mesa neighborhood, Menya Ultra has been drawing throngs of hungry patrons who line up in droves to sample what culinary personality Andrew Zimmern has dubbed the best ramen in the United States. The queue may soon reduce, as Menya Ultra will be opening a second San Diego outpost in 2018.
Ramen master Takashi Endo opened his first Menya Ultra location in Akita, Japan in 1994 and now has 11 locations around Japan and Taiwan. The restaurant has received numerous awards in its home country, including 1st Prize at the Tokyo Ramen Show in 2010-2013. The Kearny Mesa outpost is the first United States endeavor for Endo, and opened in February 2017 to immediate fanfare.
The second Menya Ultra branch will open in a 2,000 square-foot space within Mira Mesa Shopping Center. In addition to a wide array of ramen noodle soups with housemade noodles and slow-simmered broth, the new location will also offer a variety of Tsukemen - noodles meant to for dipping. Due to the ever-present lines, Menya Ultra is also in the process of obtaining a central, offsite kitchen where it can prepare its labor-intensive broths and noodles for its continually expanding demand. Rumor has it that up to six total Menya Ultra branches are in the works for San Diego and beyond.
Menya Ultra's original location sits at 8199 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, Suite M, in Kearny Mesa - with the new space set to install at 8141 Mira Mesa Boulevard in Mira Mesa for a mid-2018 unveiling.
