A popular San Diego destination for fresh seafood sandwiches, SuperNatural Sandwiches has softly opened its newest outpost in the waterfront neighborhood of Pacific Beach.
After unveiling mini-outposts in Santa Ana's 4th Street Market and Tijuana's newly opened Telefónica Gastropark Country Club earlier this year, as well as unveiling plans for a full-scale restaurant in San Diego's Little Italy to debut this fall, sea-to-sandwich sensation SuperNatural Sandwiches has opened a fast-casual branch in Pacific Beach, taking over the space that previously housed Nom Nom Bento.
"Our slogan is 'from sea to sandwiches', but now we're bringing our sandwiches to the sea!" exclaimed SuperNatural Sandwiches co-founder Anthony Tran.
Founders Tony Nguyen and Anthony Tran, along with partner Jeremy Chen, have taken over the quaint 1,100-square-foot storefront at 4658 Mission Boulevard that last housed the short-lived Nom Nom Bento. Being that the interior and kitchen are a bit tighter than the company's flagship Miramar eatery, SuperNatural will serve a limited menu, curtailing it for the beach crowd. There will be a rotating list of seafood sandwiches, including the new "Kaiju" Cantonese Lobster Roll, as well as chowder, fries, iced tea, soft drinks and agua fresca. New on the menu for PB are fish n' chips and a lobster meatball sandwich. The new location will hold a grand opening on Saturday, August 11 where the first 50 people to buy a sandwich will receive a limited edition pair of SuperNatural bamboo-framed sunglasses.
Beginning in 2012, the "sea to sandwich" approach took SuperNatural Sandwiches from a hot commodity at local farmer's markets to its own brick-and-mortar eatery in Miramar, which has been packing the house since opening in 2014. The brainchild of Tony Nguyen, SuperNatural has been using fresh seafood and ingredients from local vendors to create a lineup of made-to-order, gourmet concoctions that have caused the restaurant to quickly gain a reputation for offering some of the most delicious sandwiches in town. SuperNatural Sandwiches entered California's Orange County earlier this year with the opening of a stall within the 4th Street Market food hall in downtown Santa Ana. Last month, the company installed Supernatural Cocina at the newly opened Telefonica Gastropark Country Club Hiprodomo. SuperNatural is also in the process of opening a restaurant location in the new AV8 Building of luxury apartments being constructed at 2155 Kettner Boulevard in Little Italy.
