Gerry Torres and chef/partner Eduardo Baeza opened the flagship City Tacos in North Park in 2014 and IB Street Tacos in Imperial Beach in 2015. Building on the success of the first City Tacos restaurant, they opened a second location in La Mesa in late 2017. The duo also launched Mexican eatery and tortilla shop Tortilla N' Taco Factory in El Cajon in 2018 and opened a beachside City Tacos branch in Imperial Beach as part of a Mike Hess Brewing Tasting Room. The City Tacos team also launched Tostadas in North Park in summer 2015, which closed last year and was rebranded into Baja-style bar & restaurant, La Catrina Tapas & Cantina, in partnership with MX-native Roger Canez, but Gerry Torres reports he no longer has anything to do with that restaurant.
City Tacos opened a branch at 1031 S Coast Hwy 101 in Encinitas last November, and earlier this year, the company opened a location within an office park in Sorrento Valley and a pierside outpost in Pacific Beach. An Ocean Beach location was in the works for the space that house The Village Kitchen for more than 30 years, but that deal fell through. There is also an eatery/tasting room heading to Seaport Village in partnership with Mike Hess Brewing.
City Tacos will continue its aggressive expansion in 2020 and open a location within the 1,400-square-foot space inside the Petco Park gates at 323 Seventh Avenue in downtown San Diego. Like other area branches, it will serve a menu of seafood, meat, vegetarian and vegan tacos, as well as desserts, Micheladas, and Mexican & craft beers.
City Tacos is expected to open its first downtown San Diego restaurant by late summer to early fall. For more information, visit citytacossd.com.
