Berkeley Pizza Shutters In Downtown San Diego

October 30, 2020

After more than a decade serving Chicago-style pizza in San Diego, Berkeley Pizza is no more.

Inspired by Bay Area Chicago-style deep dish pizza concepts that he discovered while a student at UC Berkeley, Danny Palacios started Berkeley Pizza as a vendor at the Saturday Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market in 2009 before opening his first brick-and-mortar restaurant in downtown San Diego in 2011. In Spring 2014, Berkeley Pizza launched a second location in the heart of San Diego's North Park, but that branch shuttered in February 2019

Although Berkeley Pizza had operated at the weekly Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market until this past June and maintained their downtown location at 531 Island Avenue for take-out through the summer, we have received word that the Gaslamp Quarter space is now up for lease and they will not be operating any longer at area farmers markets. We reached out to Berkeley on their social channels for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publishing.
