March 20, 2021

Video footage has been released showing a man who allegedly carried his 2-year-old daughter into the elephant exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.

The below video shows footage of a man with a baby strapped to his chest inside the San Diego Zoo elephant habitat, reportedly recorded yesterday, Friday, March 20. Jose Navarrete, 25 years of age, is stated to have carried his 2-year-old daughter through two fences, one of which is electrified, into the elephant enclosure at the zoo around 4 pm Friday, say San Diego Police.

In the video, an elephant begins to charge the man as onlookers panic and yell, then the man runs through the fence and seemingly drops the child during escape. The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. Navarette is currently being held on $100,000 bail for child cruelty charges, according to jail records. San Diego Police report that he "wanted to take a photo with the African bull elephant." It is believed there were no injuries as part of the incident.
