Started As A Pandemic Pop-Up, TnT Pizza To Open A Pizza Oasis In San Diego's East Village

July 23, 2021

Founded as a pizza pop-up at the start of the pandemic, TnT Pizza is ready to go brick-and-mortar and will soon launch a pizza oasis in San Diego's East Village.

With nearly four decades of combined pizza experience, Joseph Ghafori Wehrly and Kevin Gist started TnT Pizza as a weekly pick-up pop-up in April 2020. The duo would take pre-orders for their rotating pizza styles, frequently selling out.

"We started TnT in April 2020 during our pandemic downtime, serving sourdough Detroit and bar style pizzas on a donation only basis out of an old 1950’s Wedgwood oven," explained TnT Pizza co-founded Kevin Gist. "To our chagrin, the response has been overwhelmingly great. With the encouragement of friends and strangers alike, we made the decision to open the pizza shop we’ve always wanted - a pizza paradise, if you will. We are 'pizza driven' pizza - pizza made by and for true pizza fanatics, taking inspiration from modern heavyweights such as Scarr’s (NY), Bellucci’s (NY), Mama’s Too (NY), Bakeria 101 (NJ), Apizza Scholls (OR), and Apollonia’s (CA). Our kitchen will be 'from scratch' to the best of our ability, with a focus on involved fermentation techniques, quality ingredients, and partnerships with local farms."

TnT Pizza aims to open as early as this September in the space previously occupied by Alpha Pizza, which was shuttered in 2017. The restaurant will take stylistic cues from the nostalgic mom n’ pop slice shops of 1970s NYC. Expect a menu of sourdough Detroit and bar style pizzas by the slice and whole pie, as well as takes on New York and grandma style, with other regional pizzas appearing as rotating specials. There will also be salads, Stromboli, deep fried calzones, some desserts, an ample array of vegan and gluten free options, and beer & wine.

TnT Pizza will sit at 550 14th Street, Suite 116, in San Diego's East Village.
