Professional Skateboarder & Future San Diego Restaurateur Tony Hawk Suffers 'Gnarly' Broken Leg

March 8, 2022

Professional skateboarder, San Diego native and future Encinitas restaurant owner Tony "Birdman" Hawk has suffered a brutal broken leg injury.

"Yesterday sucked," read a post on Tony Hawk's Instagram page. "I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full comeback; this recovery for a broken femur will be much harder because of its severity (and my age). But I’m up for the challenge."

The world's most famous skateboarder Tony Hawk announced today that he broke his femur bone, which is believed to be a midshaft comminuted displaced femur fracture. Posting on his Instagram page, Hawk showed x-ray photos of his left femur cracked in two pieces, with another photo showing the surgically repaired bone with four long surgical screws. In an additional post, Hawk can be seen in a video walking with crutches with the aid of a nurse and another photo shows him standing on his own next to a hospital bed.

"There is a strange irony that this happened on the eve of HBO releasing a trailer for 'Until The Wheels Fall Off,' Sam Jones’ documentary about my life & career, which has a strong focus on the philosophy of how I/we do this at our age," continued Hawk. "The answer is complicated, but ultimately it’s because I have found my sense of purpose and shaped my identity through skating, and it nourishes my mental health immensely. I’ve said many times that I won’t stop skating until I am physically unable. A broken leg - with plenty of hardware - will probably be the biggest test of that creed. I’ll be back… maybe not at full capacity but I resigned to that notion years ago as I approached 'mid-life.' Thanks to my unyieldingly supportive, tolerant family - and all of you - for the love and support through the years; I wouldn’t be here without you. See you on the other side."

In addition to being a skateboard god, a video game icon, and making frequent film and television appearances, Tony Hawk is also a restaurant investor who is partnering on the impending opening of Chick & Hawk restaurant in Encinitas. Chick & Hawk is a a casual restaurant and bar concept in partnership with former Campfire and Jeune et Jolie Executive Chef Andrew Bachelier. Expected to open this summer, the restaurant will offer a menu centered around elevated fried chicken sandwiches and approachable versions of Bachelier's globally-influenced Southern California cuisine.

A resident of San Diego's North County community of Carlsbad, CA, Tony Hawk is the subject of an HBO original documentary film called "Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off," which will debut on HBO and HBO Max on April 5. Tony's eldest son Riley is also currently dating Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Hole singer Courtney Love who recently purchased a home in San Diego's Point Loma neighborhood.
