San Diego's Historic 'Top Gun House' Repurposed Into Pie Shop

May 4, 2022

San Diego's historic 'Top Gun house' has been repurposed and is now High-Pie, a hand pie and coffee shop now open in North County.

HIGH-pie is a new dessert shop located in the historic Graves House, which was featured as the oceanfront home of Tom Cruise's character's love interest in the 1986 Top Gun movie. Located behind the Mission Pacific Hotel in San Diego's North County city of Oceanside, High-Pie is outfitted with Top Gun set photos and decor and serves individual hand pies stuffed with compote made from seasonal, locally picked fruits, like apple and cherry.

Fried hand pies can be plucked from the shop's "Willy-Wonka-esque" conveyer belt and filled with house-made mascarpone ice cream and dipped in a variety of sauces like Charlie’s Chocolate, Government Cheese, Lemon Curd and Sea Salt Caramel. The eatery also serves coffee creations and soft drinks including kombucha, cider, and New Orleans-style iced coffee with sweet milk.

The actual 500 square-foot Victorian cottage that High-Pie sits in was built in the 1880s and was restored by restaurateur Tara Lazar of F10 Creative, who also operates Cheeky's, Mr. Lyon’s Steakhouse, Birba, and Seymour's restaurants, as well as Hotel Alcazar, all sited in Palm Springs. Lazar also oversees one of Mission Pacific Hotel's restaurants, High/Low.

High-Pie is now open but will host a grand opening event on Saturday, May 14, featuring a screening of the original Top Gun movie. High-Pie is located at 201 North Myers Street in San Diego's North County city of Oceanside.
