San Diego's Award-Winning Mostra Coffee To Bring New Cafe To Hillcrest

March 15, 2023

San Diego's award-winning Mostra Coffee will open another area cafe as part of a new mixed-use development being constructed in Hillcrest.

Founded in 2013 by longtime friends Beverly & Sam Magtanong, Jelynn Malone, and Mike Arquines, Mostra Coffee was launched with the goal of spotlighting the Filipino coffee industry and carefully sources its beans from farms in the Philippines. In 2020, the coffee company was named as Roast Magazine's Micro Roaster of the Year. Named after the Italian word for "show", the company currently has cafes in Carmel Mountain Ranch, 4S Ranch, Bankers Hill and another announced last year for Mira Mesa that may or may not still be happening. Mostra also works closely with many brewers in the craft beer industry to assist with beer and coffee collaborations, boasting collaborations with more than 100 craft breweries around the world to make over 400 coffee-flavored beers.

The latest cafe location for Mostra will open on the base floor of San Diego-based real estate developer H.G. Fenton's 82-apartment, mixed use building nearly complete on Normal and Harvey Milk Streets in Hillcrest. Like other branches, this cafe will have a menu of coffee and espresso drinks brewed on a Mavam machine, including signature beverages like the Crème Brulee latte, One Bra-Zillions Coconuts cold brew and Campfire Latte. There will also be a pastry counter and Mostra beans and merchandise available for purchase.

Last April, following three days of coffee competition across six stages inside the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Mostra Coffee took home the United States Roasters Championship award at the 2022 United States Coffee Championships. Mostra Coffee roaster Nick Berardi went on to represent the United States at the World Coffee Championships in Milan, Italy, and came in 11th overall in the competition.

The new Mostra Coffee cafe will open as early as this May at 3921 Normal Street in San Diego's Hillcrest community. For more information, visit mostracoffee.com.
